Lucius sat at the breakfast table, mulling over what he’d seen. He stared off into space, trying to figure out what Castor’s expression had meant, until the man himself clapped Lucius on the shoulder, making him jump.

“Congratulations, cutie,” Castor said, plonking himself down beside Lucius. He was dressed again, in tunic and sandals and a lopsided grin. “So my brother finally got off his ass and into yours, huh?”

“You’re the ass,” Lucius replied. There was no real bite in the words though, his head still grappling with what he’d seen. “Must you be so crude?”

“I thought you sailors enjoyed a bit of tough talk,” Castor said with an outrageous wink. “But I’ll spare your blushes if you’re too shy.”

“I’m not shy,” Lucius said, unable to contain a smile. “I’m just a ‘scholarly savage’ with refined sensibilities.”

It was odd to joke about his time on the auction block, which he relived in his dreams as often as the wreck. Still, he’d tried it in imitation of Castor, and found that it actually helped. By mocking these painful memories, he felt like he had just a little more control over them.

“I hope they’re not too refined,” Castor replied, continuing the banter. “That’s no fun at all.”

“He didn’t tell you about it?” Lucius asked, grabbing chickpea paste for his bread. “I thought you two shared everything.”

“You think Blameless Polydeukes is the type to kiss and tell? Please.” Castor’s grin was wolfish. “I’ve just learned to read between the lines.”

“Are you the type?” Lucius asked before he could stop himself. “To kiss and tell?”

“Depends on who I might be kissing,” Castor replied, smirking against the rim of his cup. “And who I might be telling.”

Lucius tried not to blush, or to watch the way Castor’s throat bobbed as he swallowed. He failed on both counts.
